100 Days Of Awe: Day Three – Long Lost Family

Day Three: Long Lost Family
IMAG3571
When I conceived this project it was photographic, images capturing the wonder of nature or a magical view of the world around me. Only day three and I am finding that awe is an emotional experience and not always one that can be nabbed in an image.

Monday evenings are Long Lost Family evenings, a British television series that aims to reunite close relatives after years of separation whether it be because of adoption, family falling outs or just the passing of time. The stories that are aired are the good news stories but every week I struck by the potency of the human urge to be connected to our roots, I am moved by the deep joy that reunion brings for the individuals concerned and awed by the courage of people to be vulnerable to love. In the poignancy of that awe I see the faded fabric of the relationahip I have with my family. Some of the ties that bind are frayed, there are hard knots of old stories and layers of misunderstanding that flare up when we are too close for too long. The Long Lost Family snapshots are the fantasy I would like to live but reality is not so obliging. I can yearn for rose-tinted glasses at the expense living the raw reality of the family that I have. Long Lost Family is a reminder that I am not separated from my family, there are no real obstacles to connection and that makes me very lucky in the scheme of things.

100 Days of Awe is a playful project I set up to bring my attention to awe in my daily life. I see awe as wonder, a mixture of amazement and respect.  I expect the experience of awe to be about perception shifting awareness and that demands a reframing of some sort.  I am excited to see what will awe me on this journey.
