100 Days Of Awe: Day Twenty Seven – Blinded By The Light

Day 27:  Blinded By The Light

IMAG3938‘You always have a choice to pay attention and take an unfamiliar and perhaps risky path.  Likewise you can choose to not pay attention and stay with the version of your life implanted in you by familial and cultural influence dictating precisely what your limitations and aspirations ought to be.’ In his new book I See Clearly Now Dr Dyer invites us to pay closer attention to what and who shows up in our lives and to be willing to listen carefully to any inclination we might have an act accordingly.

In the past few days a fragment of poetry has been rattling around in my  brain – ‘through a chink too wide comes in no wonder’ – a spewed up gobbet from my unconscious it cannot escape attention after the Alchemy 4 Success immersion earlier in the week.  The line is from Advent by the Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh.  A poem that espouses self-denial to shock us back to innocence and see the world with fresh eyes.  Seeing the world with fresh eyes is what alchemy is all about but I realise that if this fragment is true for me then I can only experience wonder if I stay in the dark peering at life through narrow chinks.  Seeing it like this I am aware that I cannot be in life and fully immersed in it if this is my underlying assumption.  I am compelled to tear the curtains open but hesitate because of my fear of being blinded by the light.  In the moment of hesitation I realise that it doesnt have to be one or the other.  I can just step up to and into life.

By a strange co-incidence Patrick Kavanagh grew up in Inniskeen on the ‘stony grey soil of Monaghan‘ a next door neighbour of John Woods my great grandfather.

100 Days of Awe is a playful project I set up to bring my attention to awe in my daily life. I see awe as wonder, a mixture of amazement and respect.  I expect the experience of awe to be about perception shifting awareness and that demands a reframing of some sort.  I am excited to see what will awe me on this journey.
