100 Days of Awe: Day Two – St Mary’s Church Barnes

Day Two: St Mary’s Church Barnes
IMAG3546I am curious about this project. And nervous. Spiritual wisdom asserts the power, magic and majesty of the moment and I parrot the sentiment but to choose to actively capture awe in a 24 hr window well suddenly that puts me under pressure. I have got to be on it, aware, conscious, present, choosing. And then there it is, the unexpected moment. I am being reminded that this is what I am looking for for the the next 98 days. The unexpected.

I have not been walking for awhile; if you have been following my blog you will know that I did a very long walk (900km on the Le Camino De Santiago) in 2012 and then had a very long rest because I broke my hip. It has been a slow year of recovery. I have been walking regularly since the middle of 2013 but today was the first day I put on my pack and stepped out on an official walk. A 10km section of the Thames Path from Barnes Bridge, South West London to Twickenham in Middlesex. 10km along a river what is not to love, there is bound to be beauty. The unexpected moment came before I even arrived at the starting point of the walk. Captivated by the village church of St. Mary’s on Barnes High Street myself and my companion were drawn in to explore this loved up building and found more than we bargained for. Day Two of the Barnes Music Festival and we find the St Paul’s Girls’ School Symphony Orchestra in full scale rehearsal. Tonight’s schedule includes Elgar, Vaughan Williams and local yokel, for awhile at least, Gustav Holst – born in Cheltenham by way of Sweden, Latvia and German. I am not a coinnosseur and I dont know what we heard but I suspect it was Elgar’s Variations on an Original Theme op 36 Enigma. And what a delight that was. I am not a classical music buff but in this beautiful church in this unexpected moment I felt that I was being divinely filled up. Beautiful. Awe-some.

100 Days of Awe is a playful project I set up to bring my attention to awe in my daily life. I see awe as wonder, a mixture of amazement and respect.  I expect the experience of awe to be about perception shifting awareness and that demands a reframing of some sort.  I am excited to see what will awe me on this journey.
