100 Days Of Awe: Day Sixty Eight – Dogwood Day

Day 68: Dogwood Day

IMAG4751 IMAG4748My phone has not been working since Monday.  One of the reasons why I got the HTC One S Smart Phone was because of the camera quality.  I dropped it shortly after I bought it and before I had taken the precaution of a protective case so the cover is chipped and the glass is achingly fractured.  More recently the charging connection has seemed a little tempermental.  My contract is up in July and I am hoping to switch to SIM only.  On Monday all attempts to resuscitate the red charging light were doomed to failure which had a direct impact on my Days Of Awe project.  Without my camera I was adrift and my curiosity about the visual world around me was tempered.  As it happened this was a very neat reflection of my reality; taking a deep introspective dive on William Whitecloud’s Creative Warror training at Barnett Hill, Wornesh, Surrey the spotlight was on my internal landscape.  Back in London on Thursday I took a reticent visit to the Geek Squad at Carphone Warehouse. Their first step was to put the phone on charge.  I wasn’t too hopefully but I waited refusing to dive into the tangle of of despair that not having a phone would precipitate; the hassle, the cost. Not something I wanted to contemplate so I didn’t.  And then as if by magic the world was at rights again.

On the way home I was startled by these showy roadside flowers, a lone specimen in a row of regular scrawny kerb side crawlers,  sedate and elegant amongst the roadside geezers and quite exotic too it would seem possibly a Japanese Dogwood.  A relief to be back to capturing my experience of life.

100 Days of Awe is a playful project I set up to bring my attention to awe in my daily life. I see awe as wonder, a mixture of amazement and respect.  I expect the experience of awe to be about perception shifting awareness and that demands a reframing of some sort.  I am excited to see what will awe me on this journey.

100 Days Of Awe: Day Forty Eight – Micro Magic

Day 48: Micro Magic

IMAG4407I usually succumb to the vanity of having my hair cut and coloured twice or maybe three times a year but I dont often go for a change of look.  I pushed the envelope a couple of weeks ago going for a shorter look and a darker colour.  Well today I took it one step further.  A hairdresser in distress, crying out for a model – What’s a girl to do?  Well it was a no brainer.  My look is now a little shorter, a little sharper and to use hair dresser speak a little more ‘textured’.  That in itself was amazing enough but even more so was my commitment to heading off down to Fulham Road on my trusty steed (read bicycle) at, for me the ungodly hour, of 9am.

Not only was it early but I was running the gamut of arterial London there and back.  On my way home, at the junction of Warwick Road and High Street Kensington, I caught the a flare of wild unbridled orange out of the corner of my eye, the fragile skirts of four or five giant poppies being buffeted by May’s boisterous breeze.  I had to pull over and capture a photo or two.  Now I am using my HTC One S phone for my reportage; light and easy to carry, multi-functional and I am discovering at times capable of  magical results.  I have to take a plethora of shots, hoping that nature’s whim will not rock the focus of my attention as well as pushing my little camera to the limit of its ability to pick up micro details.  Oft times my experiments are unsuccessful and I cant properly tell until I download them onto a bigger screen.  Today I was blown away by the series of poppy shots; OMG, holey moley, Horton Hear’s A Who – I could feel my heart jumping into this minature world!  Who would believe it from a token flower bed to dress up a dreary urban junction.  This was my Friday magic for today

100 Days Of Awe: Day Seventeen – In Praise Of Cakes

Day 17: In Praise Of CakesIMAG3819This week is a full on week.  I am a little off centre, as I am away from my home base and my focus is much more social.  Today was about catching up with a friend of mine Marianne Hartley, the founder of Hartley & Soul a boutique branding company.  Marianne is passionate about creating irrestible designs, designs that are beautiful, that reflect the heart and passion of brands and that nourish the soul.  Marianne spends her time between London and Basel in Switzerland and it is such a treat when we cross paths.  She epitomises Spring; soft, feminine, flowing, the cool spring of a gurgling brook.  The cream parrot tulips I spotted at the Tube station had her name all over them and it was no surprise that we ended up in relaxing in Italian style at Carluccio’s off Kensington High Street, London UK.  I am particularly fond of Carluccios because they have a gluten free menu which is a delightful treat when it comes to pasta but they also create delectable merchandising displays designed to seduce the eye, tantalise the tastebuds and tickle the tummy.  This window display was pure artistry and fascinatingly satisfying just to savour through the eye of my HTC One S – an inexplcable but irrefutable side effect of introducing regular green juices into my dining repetoire.
