100 Days of Awe: Day One – Money

Day One: Money

Money is awesome and powerful but I wasnt expecting to have an awe inspiring experience of money this morning when I got up.  I am on a budget these days which affords me great learning about my financial priorities.  With only 7 days to the end of the month I thought I was sitting tight but a quick check of my bank account showed that I had miscalculated and there was more there than I was expecting, not much but enough to create a sudden urge to find ways to spend it, get rid of it, give it away.  All the reduced items in Tesco the local grocery store looked like must have items for my freezer, the guy, chap in hand, outside the coffee shop a deserving cause and obviously I should buy a lottery ticket.  I found myself worried about missing out on bargains, felt uncomfortable not to brighten someone else’s day with a few coppers and really concerned that this was the only time I might win the lottery;  If I didnt buy a ticket I would never know and how awful would that be?  It was painful to realise that giving into this pull in the past has put me in the debt that has lost me my credit rating and hangs over me as a repayment burden.  I turned home, those coppers burning a hole in my pocket but not before giving in to bacon and eggs for breakie.

100 Days of Awe is a playful project I set up to bring my attention to awe in my daily life. I see awe as wonder, a mixture of amazement and respect.  I expect the experience of awe to be about perception shifting awareness and that demands a reframing of some sort.  I am excited to see what will awe me on this journey.
